Hong Kong: Report on the Subject of Colonial Magazines.

From The General Officer Commanding Troops in China.

To The Inspector General Of Fortifications, Whitehall.

Sir,

Head Quarters,

Hong Kong, 7th June 1902.

2

With reference to War Office letter No.H.K.5/698

dated 18th February 1902, I have the honor to state that

I concur in the remarks of Major General Barker that the

existence of the present gunpowder depot on the old gaol

site constitutes a danger &c, but cannot agree with his

remarks that it would be a mutual advantage if the

Magazines for explosives were removed to the East or

North East face of the hill at the East end of the

Island, as it is now proposed to put a Battery on this

hill.

2. I consider it most essential that the present

magazines should be removed entirely from off Stonecutters

Island. If an explosion should take place in all

probability both East and Central Batteries and also

the Electric Emplacements would be greatly damaged and

put out of action.
